Ahh, California. Good ol’ California, where the only transition from summer to fall is the changing of leaves and the weather getting approximately five degrees cooler. Let’s face it, in California we are truly blessed with warm weather all year ’round and our summer-to-fall wardrobe encounters only minor changes. By the end of August, most of us are still rocking our shorts and sleeveless tops and it isn’t until late November that we actually bring out a heavy coat for a night out. As much as we love the fall season and all the activities that come along with it (Labor Day weekend, football games, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Black Friday), we sometimes miss out on all the great ways to give our warm Californian autumn the fashion aesthetic of a more typical autumn season, such as one we’d experience somewhere like New York.
Here are a couple of vintage-inspired, cool fall trends that will let you rock all the mauves, oranges, and burgundies yet still cooperate with the sun’s beaming rays throughout the season.
Number one. Plaid. I say this now and I will say it again: plaid is always in during the fall, and plaid skirts have never gone out of style. A unique plaid skirt will fit right into your fall wardrobe and can be layered with cardigans, a thin scarf, and/or long boots. It’s a pattern that can be worn all season long. Pairing skirts with this timeless pattern is perfect for southern California’s balmy weather, keeping you cool but also allowing you to embrace that fall Gossip Girl aesthetic.
Number two. What could possibly be better than a plaid skirt for the warm autumn fast approaching? A PLAID DRESS! This dress has thicker fabric than the usual floaty fabrics used in warm-weather dresses, but a nice breeze can still be felt and the color scheme screams fall fashion. What more could you ask for? A simple dress like this can be layered for cooler weather with a hat along with a belt for a slimmed waist effect. During fall, it’s all about expert layering.
Number three. So I have this theory that our very own fellow Californians invented the cardigan. It’s light and breezy, but still keeps you warm and on-trend. And that basically describes SoCal attire. Collared dresses allow for a sophisticated look and bold patterns add flair and style. Pairing a cardigan with any dress will appeal to a fall look but is also perfect for removing layers when necessary, in 70-degree weather.
Number four. Let’s talk business for all of you hardworking, independent women. Leather skirts have never gone out of style and neither have polka dots. Now let’s pair them together and keep our dark, cool color scheme and you have the most elegant NYC-gal attire for days at the office. You can pair this ensemble with comfy flats or with pumps – your choice.
Warm weather during a beautiful season like fall should not stop you from embracing fall’s best looks. You can recreate looks from any fall catalog and still find a way to make it work in the warmth of southern California. All of fall’s best prints, patterns, and color palettes can be tailored to your individual lifestyle because when you apply a creative eye, anything is possible when it comes to fashion!
